Better Recipes is part of the Meredith family of publications (Ladies Home Journal, Better Homes and Gardens, etc.), and is an ever-expanding online cookbook of recipes for any meal. The site appeals to an older (35+), largely female audience, and is community driven, with members submitting, rating, discussing and commenting on recipes.
Meredith's primary goal for Nitro on the Better Recipes site is to drive user-generated content, so that the site "runs itself". in this case, good quality recipes are the desired content, so users are not only motivated to submit recipes, but to rate and review other's recipes. As a secondary goal, Meredith anticipates that the increased engagement and time spent with the Better Recipes and Better Homes and Gardens brands will increase subscriptions to the print Better Homes and Gardens magazine.
Once users log in, they can immediately see their current and lifetime Kitchen Bucks balances, the community leaders, and links to Challenges and their custom elements, like their Profile, their Kitchen, and their Clubs. Nitro is powering the Avatar, Kitchen Bucks, Leaderboards and Challenges here.
The Kitchen is the focal point of the Profile page, and can be seen by any user. Nitro automatically generates a static version of the Kitchen that can be easily embedded in any page. A callout on the page lists all the ways that users can earn more Kitchen Bucks.
Meredith is using Nitro's Challenges to drive exploration of the breadth and depth of the BetterRecipes.com site.
Users can customize their virtual kitchen with virtual goods that they purchase with their Kitchen Bucks. Items can also be sold back to the store for a % of their original purchase price. This is all powered by Nitro's Virtual Room Widget, and configured via the Nitro Admin UI.
The Kitchen Catalog, part of the Nitro Virtual Room Widget, enables users to buy more items, a perfect opportunity for sponsored kitchen accessories.
All users start with a Retro Kitchen. Modern and Upscale kitchens can be unlocked when a user has earned a certain number of lifetime Kitchen Bucks.
In addition to Nitro's Virtual Room functionality, Meredith is also making use of Nitro's default Avatar Widget on Better Recipes, giving their users even more places to spend their Kitchen Bucks. The avatars are used anywhere community member's names are shown, in leaderboards, clubs, etc.
Nitro is powering the leaderboards on Better Recipes, including top point earners for the previous week and for all time.
Nitro leaderboards can also be generated on groups of people, rather than just individuals, enabling competition on an individual and collective basis.
