eSPIN is part of the Hearst Teen Network, which also includes sites such as Seventeen.com and CosmoGIRL.com. On eSPIN, a primarily young female audience (13-23) takes quizzes, plays games, matchmakes and flirts in a safe online environment.

eSPIN drives revenue through display advertising and lead-generation. To drive the advertising component of their website, eSPIN turned to Nitro. By using Nitro to increase engagement and incent various behaviors, eSPIN has increased the time that their users are spending on site, and by extension the number of ad impressions served, by a double-digit percentage.

 

The first thing you'll notice upon logging into eSPIN is the Nitro Notifier letting you know that you just earned 100 bottle caps for logging in. This JavaScript library makes it incredibly easy to message your users, in real-time, in their browser window. By letting them know that they just did something that triggered a reward, you're reinforcing desired behaviors in a dynamic but unobtrusive way. You can put any kind of message into the Notifier via the Nitro Admin UI, and style it via simple HTML and CSS.

 

eSPIN's engineering team instrumented their website with Nitro once. Then the site production team used the Nitro Admin UI to configure the rewards attached to each action, depending on how much value they created for eSPIN.

 

Users can spend their bottle caps using Nitro's Avatar Widget. This gives their users a place to spend and a reason to want to earn. It also creates lock-in, as users customize their identity on site and are personally invested. eSPIN used the default Nitro avatar system and added custom avatar items of their own using the Nitro Admin UI. Users can also enter their avatars in Hot Or Not style competions.

 

eSPIN features a series of challenges that users can accomplish to earn bottle caps and exclusive virtual items.

 

The Gold Digger Challenge pictured above requires the user to do 3 things on eSPIN.com in order to earn 10,000 bottle caps. Nitro is tracking all the user behavior and awarding users points when they've completed all their tasks. Instead of using the Nitro Trophy Case Widget, eSPIN built their own custom challenge UI using the Nitro APIs.

 

Challenges can award points, virtual goods (as shown above) and trophies. When a challenge is completed, Nitro can also notify your site via an automated callback, and then you can award a custom reward - unlock content, send an email, provide a discount, etc.
